Humans tend to be prone to a mode in which their primary relationship with reality is via received rules and beliefs, rather than rational analysis of available evidence.
On a more practical level, this leads to people evaluating statements based on who made them, rather than on their own merits (i.e. an attempt to discern their validity in terms of how they intersect with other evidence).
